Denise Hopper qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2001 from the University of Northumbria.

Denise started her career in a newly established intermediate care team in statutory services. She was employed by social care and carried out an integrated role into the health led therapy team. Main responsibilities included commissioning short term care/rehabilitation packages and minor equipment and adaptations both in the community and residential care for adult clients experiencing an acute trauma and/or discharge from hospital.

In this role, Denise carried cases through the transition to social care with the recommendations of longer term care and support services, specialist equipment provisions and major adaptations for those clients identified as requiring further interventions. Both the role and the team expanded during her time working there and along with the multidisciplinary team, Denise contributed to the development and promotion of services for clients with longer term progressive conditions which included education and therapeutic sessions for clients with Parkinsons disease, stroke and mental health support and networking sessions for those clients with mental health conditions relating to their physical limitations or diagnosis.

Following this, Denise took up a Principal Occupational Therapy post in adult social care. She has now worked there for nine years. In this role, Denise primarily manages and clinically supports a team of therapists, assistants and admin staff. Her management responsibilities are to provide day to day support and leadership to staff, ensuring policy and procedures are up to date and adhered to, managing staffing issues and recruitment and performance. Denise joint works cases with staff, clients include adults with a range of long term often progressive conditions, neurological disease, spinal injury, brain injury, as well as those with learning disabilities, mental health conditions and those clients who have functional difficulties following substance misuse.

The core business in adult care is to provide a specialist service alongside integrated teams in the provision of complex care packages, specialist equipment, manual handling advice and environmental adaptations. Most recently Denise has developed the role of the therapy team in line with the transformation of adult social care to undertake the care planning for clients leaving long term care and long term rehabilitation placements back into the community and assisting with the discharge of clients from hospital wards. At the same time Denise has worked on the development of a triage assessment service at the front line of social care in the contact centre where short term or acute concerns are initially addressed by therapists operating a telephone assessment service. Whilst carrying out this work, Denise has gained knowledge of the role of other social care staff and the range of queries that come into the adult care service and of managing a project from initial queries to completion.
