Following a number of years working within Local Authority Social Services (mental health),Val qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 2004 and began her career with the National Health Service where she held a rotational post for three years. Her posts included Orthopaedics and Surgery, Neurological Rehabilitation, Medical Specialities, Community Hospital and Paediatrics. Val completed her final rotational post as Case Manager for the Conditions Management Programme. During her rotational posts, Val benefited from working with a varied caseload including Acquired Brain Injury, Muscular Sclerosis, Spinal Cord Injury and Amputation.

In 2007, Val started work within the Paediatric service working with pre and school age children diagnosed with congenital and acquired conditions. She is particularly knowledgeable and skilled in meeting the occupational needs of young people diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Muscular Dystrophy. Clinical training has included splinting, postural management, seating and wheelchair assessment. Working with children and their experiences has enabled Val to develop extensive knowledge and skills regarding the various adaptations and equipment that are available to meet need. Val is also experienced in formulating recommendations for specialist equipment.

Val’s work in Neurological Rehabilitation and Paediatrics has helped her gain considerable knowledge and skills regarding specialist assessments and interventions. She has delivered a range of standardised and non-standardised assessments in order to generate a variety of measures that relate to an individual’s independent living and function. Assessment measures have advised evidenced-based, client-centred interventions that are sensitive to the cultural context and are based upon measurable outcomes. Val is experienced in the application of a range of knowledge and skills with regard to specialist equipment/technologies to support functional activity and cognitive ability.

Val has worked as combat medical technician (2004-08) with the Territorial Army. This required her to undergo both physical and clinical training. Val was expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and self-discipline at all times. It was a position that carried significant risk and involved working for long periods under extreme and challenging conditions. Val feels that this role was complimentary to her Occupational Therapy role as it reinforced a commitment to work that was disciplined and collaborative.
